The Messenger Description
The Messenger: Angel Harp in Italian marble with gold plated bass guitar strings from the late John Entwistle bass guitarist with the WHO.
Dimensions: 57cm x 39cm x 13cm
This work is created out of a single block of Carrara marble selected from the mountains in Italy by Ben who travels over there every few years to collect his stone. He says “ It is one of the most special places in the world for me as I get to walk in the actual footsteps of one of my greatest heroes, Michelangelo who found most of his stone in these same mountains”.
This Angel harp was inspired by the Aeolian harp used by the ancient Greeks in their gardens and is a way of creating a link back to those times. The female figurehead could almost be from a sailing ship and has the strength to face all weathers. The work would sit well inside or out and can be tuned to a scale. To hear the notes most clearly you can place your ear on the marble and then gently pluck the strings.
It has been recorded playing a simple melody and it has a tantalising quality to the sounds when amplified, though not designed as an instrument but more as a piece of wonder and magic. The tactile nature of this work invites us to get close and listen to the message of softness in the world.
